We’re smack-dab in the middle of one of my most favorite weeks of the year – the week before the Boston Marathon. It’s impossible to live in Boston and not get caught up in the excitement of the Marathon. The 100th Boston was the first marathon I ever ran, and I’ve run it once since then. Kevin and I met while he was training for Boston and we became engaged along the marathon course, so Marathon Monday occupies a very special place in my heart.
Since we’ve moved back to Massachusetts, we’ve also been home base for 2 very special friends who come into town for the event – Tim, a friend from my running-store days, now works for Mizuno and comes in to work the Expo, and Bryan, a BC alum from Montana who comes in to run the race with Kevin every year. This week/end is full of traditions – Perfectos Bagels for Tim, pre-race meal at Papa Razzi for Bryan, visiting the Expo (last year I met Kristin Armstrong:-)), and watching the runners. It doesn’t matter what shape I am in, watching Boston ALWAYS gets me excited to train for another marathon. I’ve been avoiding all thought of marathoning since my stellar finish at the NYC Marathon in 2010, but I have a strong sense that a Fall marathon – perhaps Hartford – could be in store for 2012.
This year is the first, since they were very little, that the kids will be watching the marathon with me. I plan on getting there very early so they can see the wheelchairs, the elites, the Hoyts and, of course, Daddy. It honestly takes my breath away and leaves me in tears to watch the spectrum of participants – it’s an honor to witness.
In addition to the marathon celebration, I’m also celebrating my dear friend Kim’s birthday this weekend. Kim is the very best friend of our family and she has celebrated so much with us through the years…births, birthdays, marathons, ultra marathons, new dogs, new houses, vacations — if there has been a celebration in this family, Kim has been a part. She has so much to celebrate this birthday, and I am grateful to be a part of it and to celebrate her! I think if I try I can use some variation of the word celebrate a few more times in this paragraph…maybe it’s time for a thesaurus. Or maybe you should chug your beer each time you read celebrate….
That’s it for today – I’m down 3 pounds – another reason to celebrate (chug chug).
